Abstract

In September 2019 Denpasar City recorded a deflation as deep as -0.52 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI 2012 = 100) of 133.36. The September 2019 calendar year inflation rate was 1.41 percent while the year-on-year inflation rate (September 2019 against September 2018 or YoY) was as high as 2.44 percent.

 

Five expenditure groups recorded deflation (m to m), namely group I (foodstuff) as deep as -2.49 percent; group IV (clothing) as deep as -1.77 percent; group VII (transport, communication and financial services) as deep as -0.12 percent; group III (housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel) as deep as -0.06 percent; group V (health) as deep as -0.02 percent. Meanwhile, two expenditure groups recorded inflation, namely group II (processed food, beverages, cigarettes, and tobacco) as high as 0.55 percent and group VI (education, recreation, and sports) as high as 0.05 percent.

 

Commodities recorded contributing or contributing to deflation in September 2019 include, shallots, purebred chicken, red chillies, cayenne pepper, jeans trousers, children's clothing suits, air freight rates, sanitary napkins, baby diapers, and pears.

 

From 82 CPI cities, 70 cities experienced deflation and 12 cities experienced inflation. The deepest deflation was recorded in Sibolga City (North Sumatra) as deep as -1.94 percent while the shallow deflation was recorded in Surabaya City (East Java) as deep as -0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the highest inflation was recorded in Meulaboh City (Aceh) as high as 0.91 percent while the lowest inflation was recorded in Watampone City and Palopo (South Sulawesi) each as high as 0.01 percent. If sorted from the deepest deflation, then Denpasar ranks 19th out of 70 cities experiencing deflation.
